East Wickham Ward, 22 January: Steven Hall (Conservative) 798; Michael Barnbrook (BNP) 790; Pat Ball (Labour) 700; Grace Goodlad (Liberal Democrat) 564; Laurence Williams (English Democrat) 128. Tory majority: 8. Talk about a cliff-hanger. I should think the BNP must be ready metaphorically to kill the English Democrat for standing.

Is he related to Richard Barnbrook – would that account for the strong showing? This is truly worrying if in a place like East Wickham they could get such a hefty vote.

According to the BNP website, they are not related, and Michael Barnbrook was a policeman for 30 years. He fought another ward (Christchurch) in Bexley in a by-election last year and claims to have exposed Derek Conway MP’s unusual family staff arrangements.

Yes that’s correct Jonathan. However GLA Barnbrook was there for most of yesterday and I had the misfortune to be standing next to him at the count. He was grunting everytime he saw a BNP vote and Im told was sending out word that they had won which everyone else thought they had too. Thanks goodness our box counts were slightly off!

Hilariously, on a certain white supremacist site, the line “Thanks goodness our box counts were slightly off!” has been taken by the far right conspiracy theorists to suggest we count the votes before they get to the count!
