I never actually met Shusha, but we exchanged encouraging letters, books, emails and a few telephone conversations over the past thirty years...she did indeed have a gift for friendship, and I had hoped to EVENTUALLY meet her face-to-face at the Sydney Writers' Festival here in Australia...I tried to arrange an invitation for her, and she seemed keen to visit the Antipodes..I feel quite bereft at all our loss, and would like to send a condolence card to her ex-husband Nicholas Guppy, but I only have an old Cambridge address for him, and she mentioned that he had moved, or was holidaying in Bali, a year ago....In any case, to all her many friends, my sympathy and sincere best wishes that her work will be better publicized....Helen Jordan
