Winding Down or Winding Up?

Christmas is more than a week away, but already there is an ‘end of term’ feeling to the Westminster village (lubicrated by a seemingly endless round of festive events). Yet for many within the LibDems, this is the beginning, not the end, of a period of intense campaigning activity, not least in London. On Tuesday we will know whether it is Chris or Nick at the helm nationally, but already plans are in place for an integrated campaign right across the capital, bridging next May’s GLA and Mayoral elections, and the Euros in June 2009 — with the strong possibility of a general election at the same time. This afternoon, the London Euro-team got together at the party’s Cowley Street headquarters for its first strategy meeting. If any other party has even thought about the Euros, it has been extremely quiet about it! And with 18 months to work on selling the realistically pro-European LibDem message, this should be our best opportunity yet.

LibDem campaigners should NOT be winding down at this time. Now is the time to be preparing those press releases etc. The media is short of copy at this time of the year, and will often follow stories that would get squeezed out at other times.
